Baltimore Ravens re-sign rookie QB to practice squad

The Baltimore Ravens have re-signed rookie quarterback Devin Leary to their practice squad, reports Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic.

Leary, a sixth-round pick out of Kentucky, had some ups and many downs over the summer. Unfortunately for him, a terrible performance in Saturday’s final preseason game against the Green Bay Packers – he threw two interceptions, a fumble and had a 13.5 passer rating – dashed any chance he had of a spot on the 53-man roster.

“I just feel like I have the typical initial struggles of a rookie – you have to be in practice every day, no matter what reps you get, you have to make the most of it, watch additional footage, ask as many questions as you can and ultimately – like I said – just do what you’ve learned, you have to perform at a high level as a quarterback and make sure you do your job the way it’s supposed to be done,” Leary said of his performance after the game.

Leary was the Ravens’ only 2024 draft pick not to make the selection, but he can now continue his development in Baltimore. Based on his performance, however, it’s clear that he’s still in the development phase.

“I would just say I’m continuing to learn the system and develop from Lamar (Jackson) and Josh (Johnson),” Leary said. “Emory (Jones) and I are always asking questions in the meeting room. (Quarterbacks) coach Tee (Martin) is doing a great job. Coach ‘Monk’ (offensive coordinator Todd Monken) is doing a great job, so we’re just continuing to build, staying one step ahead mentally.”

Last season at Kentucky, Leary completed 56.3 percent of his passes for 2,440 yards, 23 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His best season came in 2021 at NC State, when he completed 65.7 percent of his passes for 3,433 yards, 35 touchdowns and just five interceptions while leading the Wolfpack to a 9-3 record.

If Leary can regain his form, he may still have a chance in the NFL, but after what he showed in the preseason, it’s an uphill battle to get there.
