Babe Ruth’s jersey from the 1932 World Series auctioned for $24.12 million

Babe Ruth’s jersey from the 1932 World Series auctioned for .12 million

In 1961, Mickey Mantle wanted to challenge the great Babe Ruth for the record for most home runs in a season, but his teammate Roger Maris of the New York Yankees managed to do it instead.

More than half a century later, The Mick overtook The Babe in the world of sports memorabilia auctions when his 1952 Topps baseball card sold for $12.6 million in 2022, an auction record, but now Ruth is back on top.

The jersey Ruth wore in the 1932 World Series between the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs – when The Great Bambino took his shot – sold at auction for $24.12 million, making it the world’s most valuable sports collectible. Heritage Auctions brokered the sale and announced it on Sunday.

“Ruth kept the jersey for years after his retirement, eventually gifting it to a golfing friend in Florida in the 1940s,” Heritage Auctions wrote in its announcement. “It remained with the lucky recipient’s daughter until the 1990s, when a pioneer of the early sports auction traveled to Florida to purchase the jersey for a six-figure sum.”

“The jersey was immediately sold privately to an unknown collector, who kept it in his collection until it was auctioned in 2005 as the “1932 Babe Ruth New York Yankees Game-Used Road Flannel Jersey Attributed To the Called Shot” where it sold for $940,000.”

Ruth’s precise hit came in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series at Wrigley Field, when he was at bat with two strikes. The American icon pointed toward the outfield and hit a massive home run on the next pitch that flew over the center field wall to where he predicted the ball would land.

That happened on October 1, 1932, and on the same day, 29 years later, Maris broke Ruth’s record for most home runs in a season.
