Away joy: Statistics show our good form on the road | Statistics | News

This Saturday we start with an away game in the Premier League against Aston Villa.

Our first three away games are all against other teams that finished in the top five last season – we travel to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the Etihad Stadium next month – but our away form in the Premier League in recent years should give us plenty of reason for optimism.

On top of the tree

Over the last two seasons we have collected 81 points from 38 games, the highest we have achieved together with Manchester City, but our goal difference in those games is +48 compared to +45 for City. There is a big gap to the next most successful away team in the same period, Liverpool with 57 points.

We have also kept the most away clean sheets in the last two top-flight seasons, 10 in 2022/23 and 11 in 2023/24. These 21 clean sheets are more than we have managed in away games in the last four seasons combined.

RECORD BREAKER

Our away season last season was one of the best in our history. We won 13 of 19 away games in the Premier League and only twice have we won more. In the 2001/02 Championship season we went unbeaten away from home (the first team to do so in the Premier League era), winning 14 games. We also won 14 games in the 1930/31 season, but in 21 away games that season.

In fact, our last two away seasons are among the best in our league history. We remain the only team to go an entire Premier League season without losing away from home, and we have done that twice (2001/02 and 2003/04).

Our tally of 43 away goals last season was the highest we have ever scored in 19 away games and the third highest overall. And we only conceded 13 goals, which is the fifth best away defence in our history.

VIVA VILLA PARK

We go into Saturday’s game on the back of a nine-game unbeaten run in the Premier League away from home, with eight wins, one draw and seven clean sheets. We last went 10 consecutive away games unbeaten in 2016 and have extended that run to 12.

We could make club history this weekend if we never go behind. It would be the first time in the Premier League era that we have played 10 consecutive away games without being behind at any point.

And we could potentially break another club record too. In the Premier League, we have won 14 times at Villa Park, where we have won more times than any other club in the league (currently level with Selhurst Park).

We have taken 51 points away from Villa so far and have only taken more against West Ham in our PL history:

Most away points against Premier League opponents

West Ham 28 15 10 3 55 1.96
Aston Villa 29 14 9 6 51 1.76
