Sean McVay leaves the bench this weekend to give another member of his team the opportunity to lead the Rams.

Aubrey Pleasant, the Rams’ passing game coordinator and assistant head coach, will serve as the team’s head coach in Saturday’s preseason game against the Chargers, McVay announced Thursday.

“He’s ready,” McVay said of Pleasant, via Stu Jackson of the team’s website. “He’s earned that right and it’s more about going through some of the procedures — meeting with the officials, sorting out some of the different things related to timeouts and being able to communicate with both sides.”

Pleasant, who is in his second season with the Rams, entered the NFL coaching ranks in 2013 as an offensive line coach/head coaching intern with the Cleveland Browns. He then spent 2013-16 with Washington before moving to LA as cornerbacks coach for four seasons. Since then, he has worked in the NFC North with the Lions and Packers before returning to the Rams last year.

McVay, who will be watching the competition from the coach’s booth, had high praise for Pleasant, saying he earned the right through his influence and positive impact on the team.

This opportunity should be beneficial for both the head coach and his assistant, as McVay will get a different perspective on the day-to-day running of the game and Pleasant will be able to gain more experience toward what may be his ultimate goal of one day managing his own team.

“It certainly doesn’t depend entirely on the outcome,” McVay said. “It depends more on management and how you handle everything from the players to the coaches. It will be cool to see.”
