Athleta Executive Says It’s Been ‘Epic’ Watching Simone Biles’ Evolution (Exclusive)

Since Simone Biles started working with Athleta, the company’s marketing director has been able to witness the gymnast’s success firsthand.

For Ilona Aman, that was literally the case on Monday, August 5, when the Athleta executive was at the Bercy Arena to watch 27-year-old Biles win a silver medal in the floor exercise final at the Summer Olympics in Paris.

“Oh, it was epic. Epic,” Aman tells PEOPLE exclusively. “It’s like a tattoo on my brain. It was incredible.”

And while the world cheered on the most successful gymnast of all time as she made her comeback from the curve at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, the athletic casual wear brand could do the same.

“When we signed Simone in 2021, there was no guarantee what her journey to Tokyo would look like,” says Aman. “And I think that just showed how important it is to our brand to look at athletes beyond just on the mat, on the court or on the field. And that was the start of the conversation we initially had with her.”

With their full focus on sportswear for women and girls, the brand and 27-year-old Biles have worked together on their mission to empower the same target audience.

“When we think about the products that are launching this year, we have really become a cross-generational brand focused on cementing our legacy together,” Aman tells PEOPLE.

Through her work with the brand, Biles’ personality has come through, she adds.

“I think what a lot of people don’t see behind the scenes is the human side of her personality,” Aman says. “The fact that she’s not only the best in her respective sport, but one of the greatest athletes of our time, is that she has superpowers. We as a society, we as people, have put her on a pedestal and said, ‘Wow, take us to the promised land.'”

Aman adds, “And I think what we’ve learned over time is that the human side is the part that’s most relatable. That she may be a superhero, but when she’s on the mat, the balance beam or the vault, at the end of the day she’s just human.”

Last year, Biles spoke to PEOPLE about her partnership with Athleta Girl, sharing at the time that inspiring the next generation was a priority for her.

“I think the most important message I want to give to the kids is to never give up and never give in,” Biles told PEOPLE.

With Biles adding four more medals to her Olympic total of 11, any doubts about her return to the world stage have been erased, and Aman believes the legendary athlete’s aspirations are relatable to anyone.

Aman says, “It’s incredibly inspiring for the audience, whether they know anything about gymnastics or not, and they end up thinking, ‘Wow, I can do that.’ I can, whatever I ‘can’ do is for them.”
