ATCEMS paramedics reunite with patient who survived life-threatening bleeding

On Wednesday, Austin-Travis County EMS paramedics were able to resuscitate a woman who had survived a life-threatening hemorrhage thanks to them.

In March, paramedics responded to a 911 call and when they arrived at the scene, they found Morgan Walker lying on the ground, “in not very good condition” and surrounded by blood.

The paramedics quickly decided they needed to perform a blood transfusion and called their district commander. By the time they got her onto a stretcher and downstairs, her commander was on the scene with the supplies she needed.

Walker was visiting Austin when this happened. She had complications from surgery that caused the blood loss.

“I really credit them for saving my life,” Walker said. “I don’t think I would be here today without them, and that’s why I’m extremely grateful to Austin County EMS and all the Austin residents who made this program possible.”

Paramedics were able to save their lives because Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services launched a whole blood program in 2021. It allows paramedics to begin blood transfusions on trauma patients as soon as possible instead of waiting until the patient is admitted to the hospital.
