A’s vs. Giants game thread

A’s vs. Giants game thread

It’s that time, folks. What will likely be the final Battle of the Bay between our Oakland Athletics and the rival San Francisco Giants begins tonight at the Coliseum in the first of two games that will mark the last time these two cities meet on a baseball field.

Starting off tonight’s game is right-hander Osvaldo Bido. The rookie has had an interesting season so far, first dominating in Triple-A before being called up to the major leagues, injuring a finger, spending more time in the minor leagues, and finally getting a real chance to play as a starting pitcher for the Athletics. He’s benefited so far, looking solid in most of his starting pitches. He’s also off to his best start yet, going six scoreless innings on the road against the Toronto Blue Jays. He’ll be playing at home tonight, but San Francisco’s offense could pose more of a challenge as they battle for a playoff spot.

San Francisco, meanwhile, will counter with Hayden Birdsong, a rookie right-hander of their own. The Giants’ No. 2 prospect started his career strong, posting a 2.97 ERA in his first six starts. However, he was hit hard in his last two starts, dropping six 13 innings to raise his ERA to 5.40 for the season, a number that doesn’t tell the whole story about the early days of Birdsong’s career. The Oakland offense can’t go into this game with that bottom-of-the-table number, because Birdsong could bring his A-game tonight in front of a likely sellout crowd.

Here’s how Oakland will line up tonight:

Pretty much what you’d expect from a right-hander on the opposing mound. Rooker slides right back into the top of the lineup behind leadoff man Lawrence Butler, while left-hander JJ Bleday gets the 3-hole, with Miguel Andujar at fourth and hard-hitting catcher Shea Langeliers right behind him. Left-hander Seth Brown gets the nod at first base tonight, while rookies Zack Gelof, Darell Hernaiz and Max Schuemann round out the bottom third of the lineup.

And this is how San Francisco will be positioned:

Come on, A’s!!! Sweep these boys off the field and end this chapter on a high note!!!
