“As if a bomb had gone off.” Two injured in boat explosion at Old Bridge Marina, officials say

A boat explosion rocked a coastal community in Middlesex County, injuring two men. Michael Sorger of Perth Amboy was one of the men who survived the explosion.

The emergency call about a boat explosion at the Raritan Marina in Old Bridge came in around 3:19 p.m. on Wednesday.

Sorger said he and his friend had only planned to go fishing, but a gas stop turned into a movie scene when their boat exploded and they were both hospitalized.

“It was like a bomb went off right next to me… We were leaving Keyport and realized we needed gas… (My friend) tried to start the boat, it sputtered a little and then I untied the rope and he tried to start it again and it just exploded,” Sorger said.

Flames could be seen blazing across the water while thick black smoke filled the sky.

The investigation into the cause of the explosion and fire on the boat is ongoing, but authorities say there is no suspicion.

Neighbor Richard Buffi said it could be heard and felt at least half a mile down the road.

“I heard a loud explosion, the whole house shook. We didn’t know what it was. The windows rattled and it was a really loud explosion… it was like a shock wave,” Buffi said.

Sorger says he suffered first-degree burns to his abdomen and several cuts. He says his friend was flown to Robert Wood Johnson by helicopter with burns to his face and legs.
