The winners of the 70th National Film Awards, which honour the best films and cinematic achievements of 2022, were announced by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) at a press conference in New Delhi on Friday. Mani Ratnam directed Ponniyin Selvan: I was the big winner among Tamil films, taking home four major awards for Best Tamil Film, Best Background Score (AR Rahman), Best Sound Design (Anand Krishnamoorthi) and Best Cinematography (Ravi Varman).

Dhanush-starrer Thiruchirambalam was another Tamil film that made a splash and won two major awards for Best Actress (Nithya Menen) and Best Choreography for the song Megham Karukatha (Jani Master, Sathish Krishnan). The 2024 edition will be the 7th National Film Award win for composer AR Rahman.
