APD: 17-year-old arrested for reckless driving on Central

Police arrested him after he allegedly caused an accident while speeding down Central Avenue, often driving in the wrong direction.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Police have arrested a 17-year-old driver accused of fleeing from officers, driving the wrong way down Central and crashing into a wall near 98th Street.

It happened early Sunday morning around 1 a.m. when police were conducting a traffic stop near Central and Atrisco. Officers saw a silver Ford Mustang traveling east on Central at a high rate of speed, approaching the intersection.

According to police, the Mustang stopped when it saw the vehicles. The driver then turned around and continued eastbound on Central.

Officers attempted to pull the driver over, but he sped away. Air support pursued the vehicle, which was reportedly speeding, ignoring traffic signals, and driving without lights on. They eventually caught up with him near 86th and 98th streets, where they found him losing control and crashing into a wall.

The driver allegedly tried to flee but was caught by officers.

The driver, whose identity is currently unknown because he is under 18, is charged with reckless driving, property damage over $1,000 and aggravated eluding police.
