AOC relies on identity politics if Harris potentially becomes first female president: “No more science fiction”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (DN.Y.) predicted that Vice President Kamala Harris would be the “first female president of the United States” during a late-night appearance on Thursday, with a noticeable leaning toward identity politics.

After the end of the Democratic Party Convention, the progressive politician appeared on the CBS program “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and emphasized how remarkable it was that Harris could become president.

“This is no longer science fiction. In November, we will have the first female president of the United States,” Ocasio-Cortez predicted to thunderous applause.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (DN.Y.) predicts that Vice President Kamala Harris will be the first female president.

The congresswoman played up the drama in her statement, talking about how the only portrayal of female leaders she saw as a child was in episodes of Star Trek: Voyager, which she watched with her father as a child. But now that Harris has been nominated, that dream is one step closer to becoming a reality.

“My father thought it was very important for me to watch this because he wanted to show me an example of a woman in a leadership position. When I was a kid, the only examples of this were in science fiction.”

She continued, “And today it has become a reality for us.” The late-night show audience was beside themselves at the prospect.

In Colbert, she also had a welcome interviewer, an ardent supporter of the Democrats who even hosted a fundraiser for President Biden before he withdrew from the 2024 presidential election.

Colbert then asked the congresswoman about her statements earlier this year in which she warned that the Democratic Party would not unite behind Harris if President Biden resigned.

Reading her quote, he said, “If you think there is a consensus among the people who want Joe Biden to resign that they will support Vice President Harris, you are wrong.”

The moderator then asked her, “Have you ever been happier being wrong?”

She answered and repeated the word “ecstatic” several times.

Colbert continued, “You didn’t think this was necessarily going to happen?” to which she replied, “No, and I think it’s important that this was not preordained, this was not preordained.”

“Vice President Harris earned this nomination through her courage, her policies and every bit of hard work. But as we know, especially as a woman – especially as a woman of color – you have to fight for every single moment until the very end. And that’s what she did tonight,” Ocasio-Cortez added.

Harris received no votes from voters in the primary. Biden had clinched the nomination months ago and insisted for weeks that he would not abandon the ticket, even after his disastrous performance at the June debate, but he eventually caved to pressure and resigned.

Colbert raved about Biden and his decision to let Harris go first, comparing it to George Washington’s decision not to run for a third term as president.

“I think, much like George Washington, President Biden has done this to not only establish American democracy but to preserve it,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “And I think it’s one of the greatest acts of political selflessness that we’ll see in our entire lifetime. And I think he deserves tremendous credit for the kind of character that goes into it.”
