Anthony Edwards reveals how the US team won the gold medal against France

Minnesota Timberwolves All-NBA shooting guard Anthony Edwards had a modest night in the U.S. team’s 95-91 semifinal comeback win over the Serbian team on Thursday, and he gave his superstar teammates due credit, BasketNews reports.

The Americans will face the home team of the 2024 Paris Olympics, France, in a decisive gold medal match on Saturday.

“Steph Curry and Joel, they came alive,” Edwards said. “They carried us today.”

Stephen Curry, an All-NBA player for the Golden State Warriors who is making his first Olympic appearance at age 36, scored (appropriately) 36 points, hitting 12 of 19 shots from the field, including 9 of 14 from beyond the arc, and grabbed eight rebounds.

Former 2023 MVP, Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid, played against 2021, 2022 and 2024 MVP Nikola Jokic on Thursday and scored 19 points on a highly efficient 8-of-11 field goal percentage – by far his best game of the tournament so far.

In the first half, the Serbian team was ahead of the US team by as many as 17 points. In the fourth quarter, the Americans were still 13 points behind – until the USA made a brilliant comeback to win 32-15, powered by Curry, Embiid, Phoenix Suns All-Stars Kevin Durant and Devin Booker and All-NBA combo forward LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers. James scored a triple-double with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.

“We knew we could turn the game around, but we didn’t know when it was going to happen and we didn’t want to waste time. So I know if we get stops, we can put the ball in the basket,” Edwards revealed. “And we did. LeBron made the layup and turned the game around. And Book hit the three-pointer and definitely turned the game around.”

Edwards, for his part, only scored two points in 13 minutes of play, but delivered some solid defensive performances.

“It was a great feeling because I think we all play with no egos. The whole bench is full of great players. Everyone out there is full of great players. And we were all cheering each other on. If you look at the bench, we were all excited when Steph was making baskets,” Edwards noted.

In the US team’s first five games, Edwards averaged an impressively solid 13.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.4 steals per night as a substitute.
