The U.S. team boasted several future Hall of Famers on its roster for the 2024 Summer Olympics, but it wasn’t one of the heavyweights that most surprised Anthony Edwards in Paris.

Edwards said Saturday at Fanatics Fest that he was “impressed” with Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns. He was particularly impressed by Booker’s defense.

Booker showed his scoring ability early in his NBA career, averaging 22.1 points per game in his second season, including a 70-point performance in a loss to the Boston Celtics.

The Suns’ advance to the 2021 NBA Finals then showed that the 27-year-old could be a key player on a winning team, something that had been questioned due to Phoenix’s continued lack of success up to that point.

The Olympics could lead to another reassessment of Booker’s game after he shined in a supporting role for the United States, averaging 11.7 points and shooting 56.5 percent from beyond the three-point line. Head coach Steve Kerr called him “unbelievable this whole run” and “kind of our unsung MVP.”

It remains to be seen how much of Booker’s achievements in France will translate to his regular job.

The Suns can’t really afford to let the 6-foot-2 guard play without the ball like he did on Team USA, not while they’ve still built such a top-heavy roster around him, Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal.

But becoming a more effective two-way player would be a huge advantage for Phoenix as the team looks to make up for last year’s first-round sweep of Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves.
