Another one: Orioles place pitcher Zach Eflin on the injured list

NEW YORK – The Orioles added another injury to their starting lineup Tuesday when the club announced that right-hander Zach Eflin has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation.

Eflin was sore after his last start on Aug. 15, when he allowed one run in six innings. It had improved, but he still had some discomfort when he pitched Tuesday afternoon.

“We just thought it would be best right now to give him a little more time because of his shoulder,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “We’re optimistic he won’t miss much time, if any, after the IL. It’s a big loss, he’s pitched great for us.”

In his four starts since joining Baltimore, Eflin has a 2.13 ERA. He has allowed just two walks with 25 strikeouts in 25 1/3 innings.

Hyde announced after the Orioles’ 9-5 win over the Mets on Tuesday that left-hander Cole Irvin, who started 14 games before being moved to the bullpen in July and later sent to Triple-A Norfolk, will return to the Orioles and start on Wednesday.

The injury to Eflin, who has been a revelation since arriving from the Tampa Bay Rays before the trade deadline, is the latest to impact a pitching staff that has already lost three starters to season-ending ailments. Right-handers Tyler Wells and Kyle Bradish and left-hander John Means have had elbow surgeries; and right-hander Grayson Rodriguez is on the 15-day injured list with a strained teres major muscle.

“We did our part, no question,” Hyde said. “Zach did everything we asked and more. I know he’s very disappointed too, he was hoping to be there from the start tomorrow. We’ll just give him some time off and then he’ll be back for us.”

Corbin Burnes would rest completely but is not an option. Neither is left-hander Cade Povich, who was brought back to replace Eflin but last pitched four days ago. Since he was optioned on Sunday, they would have to use him as a replacement for the injured player if they want to field him in the next few days. An optioned pitcher is not allowed to return to the majors for 15 days unless he is taking the place of an injured player.

The Orioles have their eye on Brandon Young, a promising starter in Triple-A, but Wednesday would be a short rest for him too, leaving Irvin, who has a 4.85 ERA in 21 appearances, or Bruce Zimmerman as their only starting options.

Meanwhile, left-handed reliever Keegan Akin left the team due to paternity leave and right-hander Dillon Tate was called up.
