Anne Hathaway celebrated a major milestone: the 20th anniversary of her beloved film The Princess Diaries 2. Taking to Instagram on August 7, the actress looked back at the film’s legacy and paid heartfelt tribute to Kelly Clarkson, whose song “Breakaway” became the anthem of the film’s soundtrack.
In her post, Hathaway, 41, shared a nostalgic collection of images from the 2004 film, including memorable moments with co-stars Chris Pine, Callum Blue, Julie Andrews and director Garry Marshall. Alongside these snaps, she included a clip from Clarkson’s music video for “Breakaway,” which also features Clarkson at the film’s premiere.
“Happy 20th anniversary, #PrincessDiaries2 and @kellyclarkson’s Breakaway!” Hathaway wrote, paying tribute to both the film’s enduring charm and the iconic song that became synonymous with the film’s soundtrack.
The series The Princess Diaries played a central role in Hathaway’s early career. In the sequel, Hathaway reprised the role of Mia Thermopolis, a young woman who must find a suitable suitor to secure her claim to a fictional European throne.
Recently, Chris Pine, who starred alongside Hathaway, recalled his own breakthrough in the film. He recalled that the $65,000 he was offered for his role was a significant and transformative experience. Even though the amount fell short of expectations, Pine described the offer as life-changing.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, Anne Hathaway also mentioned the possibility of a third installment in the popular franchise. Although rumors of a sequel emerged in late 2022, there has been no official confirmation yet. Hathaway hinted that while talks are ongoing, there is nothing concrete to announce yet. “We’re in a good place,” she shared, leaving fans hopeful but still waiting for news.
Julie Andrews, who starred in the films, has also spoken out about the prospect of a sequel. In recent comments, she hinted that the idea could be on hold. “There have been talks about it, but nothing has been done. I think it could be on hold now, but I can’t be sure,” Andrews said. She was open to the idea of a new film, but tempered expectations by noting that she doesn’t expect it to happen anytime soon.
While fans are still celebrating the anniversary of The Princess Diaries 2, the film’s charm remains undiminished and both the cast and the soundtrack remain fondly remembered.
