AMD Radeon 8800 XT GPU leak suggests GeForce RTX 4080 performance at half the price

According to a new report from Moore’s Law is deadCiting sources directly at AMD, the company could launch its flagship RDNA 4 GPU before the end of the year. The graphics card, tentatively dubbed the Radeon RX 8800 XT, could be unveiled or teased at Gamescom this weekend.

According to a new report, the Radeon RX 8800 XT will offer the performance of a GeForce RTX 4080 at half the price.

Moreover, it could also be an absolute game-changer in terms of performance, shaking up the GeForce RTX-dominated PC gaming market – dramatically improved ray tracing performance thanks to an increase in RT hardware per compute unit, plus “rasterization” performance (not RT or upscaled) that will give the GeForce RTX 4080 a run for its money.

Of course, we consider this a rumor for now, so take it all with a grain of salt. The flagship Navi 48 GPU (AMD will not compete in the high-end space with its upcoming RDNA 4 generation of graphics cards) is said to offer 64 CUs, or Compute Units, with boost clock frequencies of up to 3.2 GHz.

Add to that some 96MB of “next-generation Infinity Cache,” 16GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit memory bus, and a total power rating of up to 280W—and AMD’s next-generation Radeon GPU is reportedly set to launch sometime in the fourth quarter of 2024, with an October or November launch currently on the cards.

Moore’s Law is Dead estimates that the price will be between $499 and $599, half the current price of the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER. As for AMD’s dramatically improved ray tracing performance, it will be compared to the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SPUER – a capable and powerful GPU for ray tracing gaming.

If all of the above comes to pass and AMD can hit the “high levels” of stock, it could be great for PC gamers looking to upgrade. Granted, the GeForce RTX 4080’s performance is comparable to what we’ve heard about AMD’s top RDNA 4 card. However, since the GeForce RTX 5070 isn’t expected until sometime next year, the 2024 release gives AMD time to offer a mid-range, affordable next-gen option before NVIDIA.
