Amazon is working on a new animated video game anthology

Amazon is working on a new animated video game anthology

The great boom in video game adaptations continues, even amid its recent downturn. Amazon joins the team behind Netflix’s animated sci-fi anthology series Love, Death + Robots The same should now be possible for video games – and it could bring some of the gaming world’s greats to life.

Deadline reports that Prime Video is working with Tim Miller and Blur Studios to Secret levelan animated anthology series to expand its adult animation offerings. Although little is known about the series so far, trade reports that the series will adapt several video game franchises in its episodes, including the indie platformer/roguelike Speleologyand from Amazon Games’ own publisher library, the not-so-great colonial MMORPG New World.

Considering that Amazon Games doesn’t have much else in the way of, well, Games to adapt – although it would be pretty funny if Amazon had its upcoming Lord of the rings MMO during Rings of Power is still going on – so it is no surprise that Secret level will apparently also focus on adapting games from other publishers. According to Deadline, the series will initially be expanded with a series of adaptations of famous PlayStation franchises.

Although no details have been revealed about which specific PlayStation games could be part of the series, Sony has many options. Obviously, we already have The Last of Us at HBO, and Amazon itself is already working on a live-action adaptation of God of WarBut recent plans for a horizon Adaptation at Netflix failed due to allegations against the co-showrunner, Umbrella Academy‘s Steve Blackman, so there is at least the potential for Aloy to move into animation instead, alongside other candidates like Ratchet & Clank or Astro Bot that would be ideal for animations. Hey, why not a Uncharted Adaptation to fire, while we’re at it?

It will be interesting to see what scope the show will have, but it’s already an intriguing idea, especially if it could provide a home for adapting game series that are crying out for exploration in formats outside of games that wouldn’t necessarily warrant their own long-form adaptation. We’ll no doubt learn more when Secret level will be more officially revealed at Gamescom next week. But in the meantime, let us know in the comments if there’s a particular franchise you’d like to see animated here.
