All Blacks: Robertson reveals Damian McKenzie’s ‘biggest problem area’: Planet Rugby

Scott Robertson has commented on whether the All Blacks are looking to make a change at the link position after their loss to Argentina.

New Zealand struggled to gain control of the game, especially in the final phase, and lost to the South American team 38:30.

Los Pumas secured their third win in four years against the All Blacks, with all three triumphs coming outside Argentina.

This ended Scott Robertson’s perfect start as head coach and the pressure was enormous ahead of the second meeting at Eden Park next weekend.

Successor to Richie Mo’unga

Following Richie Mo’unga’s departure to Japan after the Rugby World Cup, Robertson selected McKenzie to replace him in the link position.

Despite showing some good touches in the first four games, the 29-year-old has not necessarily secured the shirt yet and Robertson admits he needs to improve in one key aspect.

“Damian showed some really incredible first-class touches on the ball, like that chip kick,” the head coach told reporters.

“His short passing game is really good and he will grow as a game manager, that’s the biggest area.”

When asked if they would support McKenzie, Robertson replied: “Yes, we do. You have to support him and he is learning in the process.”

The link-up was involved in the crucial incident that cost them the game on Saturday when he compounded Ardie Savea’s misplaced pass by sending Rieko Ioane running towards his own line to pick up a loose ball.

It was a moment of madness for McKenzie and also for Savea, who was captain of the team in the absence of Scott Barrett.

After the defeat, Robertson reflected on the No. 8’s leadership style, as the result appeared to hit the current Rugby World Cup winners hard.

“He’s a quiet leader and that hurt,” he said. “He doesn’t just talk, he does what he does. He doesn’t say much, he sneaks behind other leaders and just whispers a few words here and there, but that was tough. It was tough for everybody.”

“That was the game”

Robertson addressed these mistakes by McKenzie and Savea and what they should have done in that moment.

“That’s the part where we have to be calm, which we’ve talked about a lot. Those are your moments; just calm down and get the ball back into their half or get a little bit in shape to play. That was the game.”

While there was little positive to report from the All Blacks, Robertson thought young lock Sam Darry, who scored his first Test try, was impressive.

“Our boys put in a tremendous effort and performed brilliantly. Sam Darry, second Test, was great at Test level,” he added.
