Alex Turner says the Arctic Monkeys are avoiding science fiction lyrics on their new album

Alex Turner says the Arctic Monkeys have avoided science fiction lyrics on their new record.

The band’s frontman spoke about the group’s seventh album, “The Car,” which follows 2018’s “Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino,” a concept album about a resort on the moon.

Alex, 36, told The Yorkshire Post newspaper on Friday (21.10.22): “I would imagine that at some point the intention was not to get anywhere near science fiction sounds with this record – neither in the lyrics nor in the music.

“Perhaps on the musical side we managed to escape from science fiction.”

However, he added: “There are actually some places where a bit of the language from the last film remains, probably more than I realized.

“There are a lot of things that feel different to me than the last. The dynamic of the whole thing has evolved. Maybe these ideas will be implemented more effectively here.”

In an interview with NME on Friday, Alex also added that the band didn’t initially think they wanted to record any more records.

He added: “The records we’re making now are definitely different to the ones we probably thought we were making when we started out – in fact, we thought we wouldn’t make any more records at all.

“Twenty years ago I could not have imagined that we would go beyond… Well, the fact that we called ourselves ‘Arctic Monkeys’ indicates the scale of our ambitions.

“When I think back to the past, I feel like we only acted instinctively, even when making creative decisions.

“I mean, first of all, we didn’t really know how to play our instruments in the beginning. But other than that, I don’t think much has changed within the band. We may know a few more tricks, but we still follow the same instinct.

“I think that’s maybe the key difference between (‘The Car’) and the last record… maybe we hadn’t quite grasped the dynamics of the bigger, newer sounds we were exploring.

“But playing live together again has certainly helped us get there and we’ve developed a greater awareness of each other. You find yourself in a different place when you take the songs into a new environment beyond where they were recorded.”
