Alana Reid and Bayanda Walaza win 100 m at U20 World Championships

Jamaica’s Alana Reid and South Africa’s Bayanda Walaza won the 100-meter titles and the U20 World Athletics Championships in Lima, Peru on Wednesday night.

Reid, 19, won in 11.17 seconds. She was part of Jamaica’s 4×100-meter relay team that finished fifth at the Paris Olympics. She finished sixth in the 100-meter race at Jamaica’s Olympic qualifying heats.

Walaza, 18, clocked a time of 10.19 seconds. He was part of South Africa’s 4×100-meter relay team that won silver at the Paris Olympics.

There was no American represented in any of the finals.

At the last two U20 World Championships in 2021 and 2022, Letsile Tebogo of Botswana won the men’s 100 m and Jamaica’s Tina Clayton won the women’s 100 m. Tebogo then won the 200 m at the Paris Olympic Games.

The last Americans to win the 100m at the U20 World Championships were Noah Lyles and Candace Hill in 2016. Lyles went on to win the 100m at the Paris Olympics and the last three senior world titles in the 200m.

The U20 World Championships are for athletes who are between 16 and 19 years old on December 31. The U20 World Championships last until Saturday, live on peacock.

Former U20 world champions who won gold at the Paris Olympic Games also include Kenyans Emmanuel Wanyonyi (800 m) and Beatrice Chebet (5,000 m, 10,000 m), Swede Mondo Duplantis (pole vault) and Canadian Camryn Rogers (hammer throw).

The next U20 World Championships will be held in Eugene, Oregon in 2026.
