Airbnb offers life-sized Polly Pocket house – and it has no roof

In honor of Polly Pocket’s 35th anniversary, Airbnb unveiled a new adventure experience on Wednesday: a life-sized version of the Mattel doll’s iconic plastic house in Polly’s hometown of Littleton, Massachusetts.

The hostess, Polly herself, invites nostalgics to her “Slumber Party Fun” house for the duration of her vacation and writes in an ad that she has transformed it into a 90s time machine “where your imagination can run wild.”

There are a few small caveats, however. The house, which is shaped like a makeup tin, has no roof and cannot be closed because, like its host, it is “always open for adventure,” according to the ad. The property also does not have on-site showers and warns of possible noise from “natural sounds at night.”

Still, Airbnb says the home is “straight out of a 90s dream” and ready for an adventure “on a life-size scale.”

Guests can try on clothes in Polly’s closet, decorate themselves with adhesive nails and butterfly hair clips, make charm bracelets and enjoy a movie marathon with popcorn and videotapes. The house is also stocked with typical ’90s treats including Ring Pops, Push Pops and Baby Bottle Pops.

“Try on my most iconic outfits in my closet – yes, the ones you chewed on when you were younger,” the ad says.

While the two-story, 42-foot-tall building is equipped with a retro refrigerator, it does not serve meals and lacks one key amenity for “pajama party fun”: a bed.

Instead, sleeping accommodations are a pull-out sofa or a tent set up ten feet from the house. The listing also notes that you’ll need to bring your own blanket or use one of the four sleeping bags available.

“I wanted this pajama party to feel like it was still the 90s!” Polly writes in her ad.

Polly’s Compact is the newest addition to Airbnb’s Icons category, a program dedicated to unique stays and experiences.

Last year, the company launched a real and very pink Malibu DreamHouse experience in California in honor of Barbie Film release. Based on Mattel’s famous dollhouse design, the package offered two nights’ accommodation for up to two guests on the Malibu coast.

Other current viral offers include a replica of the Disney and Pixar house Higha new edition of Marvel’s X-Men Villa and a private living room concert by rapper Doja Cat.

“What if these worlds that only exist in your imagination could somehow become real?” CEO Brian Chesky said in an interview with CBS Morning.

Like her Mattel colleague, Polly will also be coming to the big screen. The live-action film, first announced in June 2021, is set to Emily in Paris Actress Lily Collins in the title role. But last month, Girl Creator Lena Dunham told The New Yorker She gave up directing and producing the film after working on the script for three years.

“I feel like the next movie I make has to feel like a movie that I absolutely have to make, nobody else could make it but me,” she told the outlet. “And I thought other people could make it Polly Pocket.”

While they wait for the movie to come out, kids of the 90s can relive their childhood with Polly later this summer.

Starting August 21, guests can book overnight stays in the compact home on request between September 12 and 14. The home costs $89 per person in honor of the launch of Polly Pocket in 1989, sleeps a maximum of four people, and has its own guest bathroom.

While one X user dismissed the listing as a “silly marketing gimmick,” Chesky said, “That’s the point.”

As for cleaning fees, Chesky told another X user that unlike most Airbnb listings, there are none.
