After a slow start, the pace increases

“We’re all evaluated every time we’re on the field,” Osborn said. “It’s really important for all of us, not just the young players, to work hard every day.”

Aside from the wideout options, here are one man’s observations from Day 12 of training camp.

*The extended break had little impact on the PUP list, as Kendrick Bourne (knee), Sione Takitaki and Cole Strange (knee) remain out. Christian Barmore (blood clot), Marte Mapu and Marcus Jones are also out, while rookie linebacker John Morgan missed his first practice of camp. Mapu and Jones were on the field at times but did not participate in practice. Long snapper Tucker Addington wore a red non-contact jersey, while Joe Cardona, who did not change for the Panthers game, wore his regular white jersey.

*Hunter Henry was in full gear but did not participate in the 11-on-11 drill. The tight end appeared slow to get up after a play in practice on Aug. 6 and did not dress for the Panthers game. He only participated in positional drills.

*Barmore’s absence has created some opportunities inside the defensive line, and Jeremiah Pharms took advantage of his reps in the season opener against Carolina. Pharms, who has been in the Patriots’ organization for the past two seasons, appeared in 12 games in 2023. The 6-foot-2, 295-pound defensive tackle is not built in Barmore’s mold, but is viewed more as a run stopper. He also showed some playmaking ability against the Panthers, out-hitting Carolina’s Jack Plummer and finishing with four tackles in 22 productive snaps. “I want to work right away whether (Barmore) is here or not,” Pharms said after practice. “I’m happy to be part of this group. I’m trying to take the next step, and I feel like I’m getting better mentally and physically. Every time I put a helmet on, that counts.

*Trysten Hill, another defensive tackle looking to fill a role, has also flashed at times in camp. Hill, a former second-round pick in Dallas, is entering his sixth season after finishing the 2023 season with the Patriots. At 6-3, 310 pounds, Hill is definitely more of a run-stuffer and has just 1.5 sacks in 32 career games. But while playing with and in place of Davon Godchaux under center, Hill has occasionally shown he can penetrate. He was quiet against Carolina, finishing the season with just one tackle in 25 snaps.
