According to Obsidian’s game director, Avowed will have multiple endings

Highlights

  • When Avowed launches next year, it will have multiple endings, according to game director Carrie Patel.
  • According to Patel, the final slides are in the double digits and the game allows players freedom throughout the playthrough.
  • Furthermore, according to Patel, there will be neither a canonical nor a “true” ending.

While it was pretty disappointing to learn that Avowed has been pushed back to February 18, 2025, there is still some good news. Director Carrie Patel has revealed new information about the plot of Avowed, including the sheer number of possible endings.

I know I don’t have to play Pillars Of Eternity before Avowed, but somehow I have to

I sometimes feel the urge to get everything done, and I bet you feel the same.

In an interview with IGN at Gamescom, Patel shared that there is not just one ending. When asked how many there are, he replied:

That’s very difficult to say.

I can tell you that the number of our final slides is in double digits and you can end up with many different combinations of them.

The ending slides refer to the post-game images that provide context to the world after the player has finished the game. Double digits are certainly more than 10, meaning there will be no shortage of unique endings.

Patel added:

This is an Obsidian game, so your ending is actually the sum of your choices throughout the game and in many pieces of content, depending on what you encountered and what you did when you found it.

In other words, no two player experiences will likely be the same. Additionally, this approach absolutely encourages replayability to see how different actions affect the world. Patel noted, “There’s a lot of freedom in how you progress,” so it will be interesting to see what paths players take.

No Canon, no problem

With so many possible endings and so much freedom for the player, one might wonder if there is a “true” ending. It turns out there isn’t.

“In my opinion, there is no canonical ending,” Patel said. “It’s your experience.”

This is super refreshing to hear, as it encourages players to really make the game their own, rather than trying to adapt their actions to get the “true” ending. It’s unfortunate that the game won’t be coming out this year, but it certainly sounds like Obsidian has a potential gem on their hands when the game does launch.
