“Abortion-Palooza” at the DNC could force pro-life Democrats to quit the party: “It’s just disgusting”

“Abortion-Palooza” at the DNC could force pro-life Democrats to quit the party: “It’s just disgusting”

On the occasion of the Democratic Party Convention, the Democrats are holding an “abortion festival” in Chicago.

“They are degrading human life, and women’s life at that. It’s just disgusting. This continued celebration of abortion,” Kristen Day, executive director of Democrats For Life of America, told Fox News Digital.

Day is appalled that Planned Parenthood is offering free abortions in a “mobile health clinic” parked in Chicago during the convention. Abortion advocates also marched through the streets of Chicago in the run-up to the convention.

“I think this convention is turning into an abortion-palooza. In response to them doing abortions, we would actually support women in need. So we started a diaper drive,” Day said.

“Planned Parenthood, that’s what they do. They perform abortions. They don’t support pregnant women,” she continued. “And that just continues to prove that that’s their main focus… all they care about is abortion.”

Day believes the Democratic Party’s “overall problem” is its constant “celebration of abortion,” even though progressives used to want abortion to be safe, legal and rare.

“The extremists’ fixation on this is harmful to women,” she said.

“In the states with the highest abortion rates, they don’t even report the numbers. They don’t report the side effects. They don’t report the negative effects. And in the states that do, women are having nine or more abortions. How is that good for women’s health? Not at all,” Day continued. “So I think the celebration of free abortions here is just a real travesty for Americans.”

Day predicted that there would be no more talk of “respect for life” at the DNC, which she said would motivate the organization “Democrats For Life of America” even more.

“We are showing what it means to respect human life and provide pregnant women and new mothers with the resources they need. And that is what Democrats should focus on. That is consistent with Democrats’ values. Performing abortions and killing babies is incompatible with helping the most vulnerable in our society,” Day said.

Democrats have made abortion a central theme of their national campaigns this election year, warning, among other things, that a Republican majority in Congress and another four years in the White House for former President Trump would mean a nationwide ban.

Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade and the inauguration of Vice President Kamala Harris to succeed President Biden, the Democratic Party has doubled down on its rhetoric around “women’s right to choose.”

Day said former Presidents Clinton and Obama largely stuck to the mantra of “safe, legal and rare,” but Kamala Harris puts “abortion first” when it comes to the polarizing issue.

“I just don’t have confidence that she’s going to do anything to reverse this trend. I just don’t know where we’re going as pro-life Democrats in this party if they don’t want us,” Day said.

She said her group was in Chicago to engage directly with Democratic leaders.

“We want to talk to the delegates and ask them, ‘Do you think this party is big enough for the pro-life Democrats? Do you think we should be included?’ I’m really interested in having those conversations and finding out what the future of the pro-life Democrats is going to look like and where we stand,” Day said.

Day said she would like to ask Vice President Harris and other leading Democrats if they have ever spoken to a woman who regrets an abortion, someone who needed help from a pregnancy center to carry her baby to term, or even a rape victim who chose to keep the baby. She believes that “celebrating abortion further harms these women” who have already made very difficult decisions.

If Day gets the chance to speak with DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison, it would be a first.

“We’ve met with every single party chairman since I took this job. That’s the first thing we do when a new party chairman is elected: We bring elected pro-life Democrats into the DNC and explain why the party needs to be the big party and why it’s important to include pro-lifers,” she said.

“Jaime Harrison has refused to meet with us,” Day added. “He has refused to meet with elected Democrats to talk about the issue and get a better sense of where we stand.”

A DNC spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Harrison.

Day, a Democrat since working on Michael Dukakis’ 1988 campaign, said her group had to “discuss” leaving the Democratic Party after a spate of pro-abortion speeches at the DNC. She also feels “real hostility” from Democrats because of her pro-life stance.

“I think this is a decision we really need to think long and hard about,” she said. “The Republican Party is now the party with the most votes … and the Democratic Party is getting narrower and narrower. If I leave, it’s not because I wanted to, it’s because they don’t want me.”

Day believes that “Republicans are actually opening the door for pro-life Democrats to cross over,” which could have significant electoral implications.

“I think the Democratic Party needs to wake up,” she said. “They care so much about abortion that they don’t seem to care. Abortion is more important than winning.”

The Democrats For Life of America diaper drive has raised thousands of dollars for Chicago families.

“We talk to local pregnancy centers in Chicago and find out what they need so we can accommodate all of their needs,” Day said.
