(Editor’s note: Maura Sanders, who recently secured the majority of votes to become the next Peninsula Township Supervisor, writes about the path forward after the November general election. After the November election, she will officially take office at noon on November 20, 2024. NOTE: She actually sent this to me the day after the primaries, but I was in the UP and had a spotty connection on my laptop. -jb)

I’ve had a day to reflect on what it means to run unopposed on the November ballot and what my commitment to the community will look like as the next Supervisor.

I would first like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who ran for office in the Township. Commitment to service is never taken lightly. Congratulations to the people running for the general election. I look forward to learning more about all of you.

For those who are not moving forward now or after the general election, my sincere wish is that you will stay with the community in a volunteer capacity and/or as an engaged citizen and hold the community accountable. Our community succeeds when the entire community participates, and there are many ways to do that.

I campaigned for transparency, consistency and leadership. I am committed to these goals as a trustee and will continue to do so as a supervisor. Open, honest and respectful discussions are a healthy part of a community and lead to the best decisions.

I will work diligently to ensure that the expectations of all residents are met at Township Hall and that our ordinances are consistently applied and enforced. I will be a full-time supervisor, leading by example and putting the needs of the entire community first.

As always, send us your feedback and questions so we can work together.

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started the Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt called to provide local news to the Old Mission Peninsula community. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines such as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies’ Home Journal, all I really wanted to do was write about my own community, where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.

Because the Old Mission Gazette is a “reader-supported newspaper” – meaning it only exists thanks to your financial support – I hope you’ll give us a few dollars when I mention your event, business, organization or news, or if you just enjoy reading about what’s happening at the OMP. In a time when local news is a thing of the past, supporting an independent local newspaper is more important than ever. Thank you for your support! – Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
