A look at JCPS’s transportation changes ahead of the first day of school

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Ahead of the first day of school, JCPS is issuing several tips to help parents who plan to use JCPS transportation options be best prepared.

The district reminds parents to check the JCPS Bus Teller as your child’s transportation may have changed prior to the first day.

Parents are also asked to check the start times at their school. The three staggered start times this year are 7:30, 8:40 and 9:40.

If you submitted a Transportation Confirmation Form after July 22, you are not guaranteed transportation during the first few weeks of school.

School staff will use color-coded tags to document students’ bus ride information. Kindergarten students will have red tags, all other elementary students will have yellow tags, and middle and high school students will have green tags. Parents are reminded not to remove these tags from their backpacks.

Parents should also follow JCPS drop-off guidelines.

Kindergarten students must be dropped off at the bus stop by a parent or guardian. Otherwise, they will remain on the bus and return to their school. All other grades may be dropped off without an adult present.

Many parents also use TARC for transportation to their child’s school. All JCPS middle and high schools have access to TARC day passes to distribute to students who need them.

Families can also receive a reduced fare by going to TARC headquarters at 1000 West Broadway and setting up a My TARC Youth card account. Parents will need proof of enrollment, such as a transcript or student ID.

“Students ages 6 to 17 are eligible for a reduced fare of 80 cents per ride, almost half our regular fare with the My TARC card,” said Alex Posorske, TARC’s marketing and communications director.

Since June 1, TARC has distributed more than 500 cards to students.

“It’s a rechargeable ticket that you can top up with cash. Just tap it when you get on and the amount will be automatically deducted,” said Posorske.

Additionally, approximately 70 TARC riders will transition to JCPS buses over the course of this school year. Because so many parents rely on TARC transportation, they are encouraged to learn about TARC 2025, a proactive plan that will redesign the TARC network to address current financial challenges.
