Devin Booker of Moss Point wins gold medal as the US team defeats France 98-87

The United States men’s national basketball team won its fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal on Saturday after a thrilling 98-87 victory over France, with a Mississippi man playing a key role in the U.S. team’s latest success.

While Steph Curry, the NBA’s all-time record holder for three-pointers, led the US team to a hard-fought victory against their French opponents in front of a Parisian crowd with heroic performances in the final stages of the game, Moss Point’s Devin Booker was in the game throughout.

After a hard-fought first half, Team USA had an eight-point lead. The Americans came into their stride early in the third quarter, taking a 14-point lead in what had been a back-and-forth game. But the French, led by the young, up-and-coming Victor Wembanyama, were not going to be defeated.

By the start of the fourth quarter, the US team’s lead had shrunk to six points as the French were determined to pull off an upset in front of their home crowd. Efforts by stars like Curry, Lebron James and Kevin Durant to put the US team up the scoreboard were countered by a rampant French team that managed to cut the deficit to three points with 2:58 left.

Then the Curry avalanche began. Over the next two and a half minutes, the Golden State Warriors NBA star managed to hit not one, not two, not three, but four three-pointers that helped the USA build a one-point lead that gave them a double-digit victory. A layup by Booker with 21 seconds left in the game sealed the win for Team USA.

After starting Saturday, Booker scored the team’s second-best 15 points, adding five rebounds and three assists. Curry led the way with 24 points. Durant scored 15 points. James finished with a double-double of 14 points and an impressive 10 assists.
