Phoenix Suns stars help Team USA win gold medal

PHOENIX – With a gold medal game victory over Victor Wembanyama’s France, Team USA officially sealed a perfect 11-0 run that has lasted the past month – and the Phoenix Suns duo of Kevin Durant and Devin Booker were once again instrumental in the victory.

Head coach Steve Kerr decided to start Durant for the first time this cycle, and it could be the last time the Suns star competes in Olympic competition.

Thanks to a three-pointer from Durant and seven points from Booker, Team USA got off to a fast start and took a 20-15 lead after the first quarter.

France stayed within striking distance for most of the second quarter, even taking the lead at several points, but a late push by the Durant/Booker duo led directly to a three-possession lead of 49-41 at halftime.

Booker was the USA’s leading scorer after the first 20 minutes with 13 points, while Guerschon Yabusele was number one in France with 15 points and Wembanyama scored an efficient 13 points.

The start of the second half was similar, although the USA was able to extend its lead to double digits. A three-pointer from Evan Fournier and a goalie from Durant cut the USA lead to 72-66 heading into the fourth quarter.

Durant scored a decisive three-pointer less than two minutes into the final quarter, extending the Americans’ lead to 77-68.

The game seemed to be heading towards its final end, but France fought back and reduced the lead to three goals with three minutes to go.

Three three-pointers from Stephen Curry towards the end of the game increased the USA’s lead to 9 points again with 30 seconds left – and a layup from Booker immediately afterwards ended the French comeback.

Team USA has now won five gold medals in a row – and that would not have been possible without the Booker/Durant duo.

The next Olympic Games are scheduled to take place in Los Angeles in 2028 – and Booker is expected to play a key role in the team again.
