Grant Fisher surprises the distance world and takes bronze in the men’s 5000 m race

PARIS, France – Things looked bleak until the final corner, but Grant Fisher made one last push and fought his way from seventh place to the bronze medal in the men’s 5000m final. Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen won gold in 13:13:66 and Kenya’s Ronald Kwemoi took silver.

It was Fisher’s second bronze medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

The native of Grand Blanc, Michigan, remained in medal position for a third of the race.

After six laps, the field remained close together, with Ethiopian Addisu Yihune in the lead.

With two laps to go, Ethiopia held the first two places, with Fisher just behind in third place.

Fisher seemed to be weakening on the home stretch, but a final second sprint gave the American his second bronze medal. Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen won gold. Kenyan Ronald Kwemoi took silver.

Grant Fisher wins training in Park City

Minutes after becoming the fourth American man to win a medal in the Olympic 10,000-meter race, Fisher spoke with KSL’s Alex Cabrero about his move to Park City.

“I moved to Utah by myself. I didn’t know anyone,” Fisher said. “All I had was my coach… I didn’t know who I was going to train with, I didn’t know who I was going to hang out with, I didn’t know what community I was going to be part of, and you know, a lot of people in Utah kind of adopted me like they were their own.”

“It’s a fantastic place to train, a fantastic place to live and the community is great. I moved there because I hoped this would be a piece of the puzzle that would get me to the podium and it was.”

Fisher also competed in the Tokyo Olympics, but was not as successful there as he was in Paris. Utah Olympic marathoner Jared Ward started the Utah Elite Runners Program a few years ago. He wanted to create a team to recruit and retain high-performance runners in Utah. Fisher decided to do so and is now an Olympic medalist.
