5 lessons learned from the first half of preseason against the Jets

The Washington Commanders and New York Jets are tied 10-10 at halftime of their Week 1 preseason game at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels scored a touchdown on the opening drive to give Washington a 7-0 lead. The Jets’ only touchdown came when quarterback Andrew Peasley found Jason Brownlee for a 12-yard touchdown.

Washington kicker Riley Patterson missed a 39-yard field goal attempt, while Ramiz Ahmed converted another attempt to make it 10-7. Jets kicker Greg Zuerlein tied the score just before halftime.

Here are five quick thoughts on the first half.

Head coach Dan Quinn must be pleased with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. Daniels completed two of three passes for 45 yards on his first drive, including a beautiful 42-yard pass to wide receiver Dyami Brown. A few plays later, Daniels scored a touchdown from three yards out, giving Washington a 7-0 lead. The rookie passer couldn’t have gotten off to a better start.

Wide receiver Dyami Brown, who has been with the team for four years, may have finally seen the light. After catching just 29 passes in three seasons, the new coaching staff may have brought Brown into the mix. Perhaps it’s because they have a quarterback like Daniels who can take advantage of Brown’s speed and ability to make big plays. Brown is on pace to become Washington’s third receiver, and that’s not a close call. His development has been an encouraging story even in training camp.

When the Commanders claimed Riley Patterson off the waivers list, it looked like they had found their kicker. However, Patterson and Ramiz Ahmed were unable to separate themselves during the early stages of training camp. The games offer a new opportunity. In the first half, Patterson missed a 39-yard field goal, while Ahmed was successful on his point-after attempt and made a 40-yard field goal. Ahmed has the advantage. This battle will continue throughout training camp as Washington waits to see if other experienced kickers are released.

We’ve said it many times: Second-year cornerback Emmanuel Forbes needs a strong training camp and a good preseason. Forbes was scheduled for X on Thursday after struggling in joint practice against Garrett Wilson and the Jets. Wilson is one of the best young wide receivers in the NFL. Forbes had good coverage on a New York pass play in the first half, but allowed the Jets’ only touchdown of the second quarter. Jason Brownlee, with all due respect, is not Wilson, and he beat Forbes cleanly. Brownlee is a roster prospect, while Forbes was a first-round pick a year ago. Forbes needs to keep playing in these games.

General manager Adam Peters will have a tough time keeping UDFA safety Tyler Owens off the 53-man roster. The super-athletic rookie has stood out in training camp as he struggled to form a strong safety group. Owens began practice with several players ahead of him, but he has closed the gap. The best way to impress coaches is to do so in games. In the first half, Owens stood out on two different plays. He is big, fast and physical, making him a contributor on special teams while developing as a safety. The Commanders have found a keeper in Owens.
