17-year-old girl charged with premeditated murder

According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, a 17-year-old female was arrested in connection with a shooting that killed another 17-year-old in Pierson on Wednesday night.

The suspected shooter has been “charged with first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder in connection with the shooting that killed Odie Carbajal of Crescent City and injured another victim,” according to a press release from the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

The News-Journal is not naming the suspected shooter because of her age. It is unclear whether she will be charged as an adult.

The shooting occurred around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday near the 300 block of Main Street in Pierson.

Officers found Carbajal unconscious in the driver’s seat with multiple gunshot wounds. The 17-year-old died minutes after they arrived and attempted to resuscitate him. There were two other people in the car: an 18-year-old with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg and another passenger who was not injured and fled the scene before authorities arrived, according to the sheriff’s office.

“Through investigation and with some help from family members of our suspects, we were able to determine that the individuals in the car were attempting to conduct a drug deal for a quarter pound of weed with a 17-year-old female, her 15-year-old brother and a 15-year-old friend,” Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood said in a video announcing the arrest.

According to the sheriff’s office press release, the 17-year-old and the two other suspects “approached Carbajal at the driver’s door and pointed a firearm at him in an attempt to rob him. During the robbery attempt, the suspects fired their weapons, striking Carbajal and a passenger.”

Investigators managed to secure two 9mm firearms at the crime scene that were believed to have been used in the shooting, as well as several empty 9mm cartridge cases.

No charges have yet been brought against the two 15-year-olds.

The sheriff’s office added that the incident remains under investigation “and that additional charges are possible as investigators collect and review evidence.”
