A serious listeria outbreak linked to Boar’s Head deli meats has claimed another life, bringing the total number of deaths to three. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the latest victim is from Virginia, following previous deaths in Illinois and New Jersey. The affected individuals, aged between 32 and 94, have all been hospitalized, and the total number of sickened people is now 43 in 13 states.

The outbreak, which began in May, has led to a massive recall of Boar’s Head products. Initially, 200,000 pounds of meat were removed from shelves, but that number was later increased to seven million pounds. The contaminated products were traced to the company’s Jarratt, Virginia, manufacturing facility, specifically its Strassburger brand liver sausage. The recall, which was expanded on July 31, includes 71 products listed on the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service website.

Boar’s Head, a long-established company based in Sarasota, Florida, has not yet commented on the situation. In response to the outbreak, the CDC has advised consumers to clean their refrigerators and any surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled products. Retailers are also being urged to thoroughly clean their deli counters to prevent further contamination.

Legal action has already been taken against Boar’s Head and the grocery stores that carry its products, including a class action lawsuit for failing to adequately warn customers about the outbreak.
