GTA 6 will not be available as a subscription from day one because Take-Two’s “decisions are rational,” says CEO

Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, said the company was not tempted to put its game on subscription services like Xbox Game Pass from day one because “our decisions are rational.”

Speaking to our sister site GamesIndustry.biz, Zelnick said that while he accepts that “offering a top title at a premium price on a subscription service will push consumers to that subscription service, at least for a period of time,” this “will not influence Take-Two’s decision (not to offer AAA games on subscription services from the start).”

Take-Two has “15 Immersive Core” games on the books for 2026 and 2027 – one of which is GTA 6, of course – as well as one indie game, five mobile games and three remasters. Zelnick says his company’s “job is to outperform the industry, and the only way to do that is to produce big hits, and I think we have all the necessary elements to deliver that.”

“There are modest tailwinds that are positive,” he concludes. “Our job is to outperform the industry and the only way to do that is to win big and I think we have all the necessary elements to do that.”

Yesterday we reported that Zelnick asked fans if they could please give the new Borderlands movie “a chance” because “a lot of people worked really hard on it.”

Zelnick was asked about the film’s less-than-stellar early reviews during the company’s first-quarter earnings call. While he called the film’s “look and feel” “great,” he told investors that the film’s performance would have “no financial impact” on Take-Two or the Borderlands franchise itself.
