As a tribute to the men and women in law enforcement, flags at the State Capitol and in Carroll and Paulding Counties were flown at half-mast following the deaths of two police officers.

“As we mourn the loss of Carroll County Investigator Taylor Bristow during a painful and difficult week for Georgia law enforcement, I have ordered flags at the State Capitol and in Carroll County to fly at half-staff on Thursday, August 29, in honor of his bravery and sacrifice,” Governor Kemp tweeted.

Governor Kemp emphasized the importance of recognizing the service and dedication of these fallen officers in a recent social media post. Late last week, flags also flew at half-staff following the death of a Paulding County Sheriff’s deputy.

“My family and the entire state of Georgia continue to mourn the loss of Paulding County Sheriff’s Deputy Brandon Cunningham,” tweeted Governor Brian Kemp. “As we honor his life and service, I have ordered flags at the State Capitol and in Paulding County to fly at half-staff this Friday, August 23rd.”

In honor of Taylor Jaimeson Bristow

Investigator Taylor Jaimeson Bristow, who served as a deputy and investigator for the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office for six years, died Friday, August 23, from injuries sustained in the line of duty.

As a mark of respect, flags at the State Capitol building and in Carroll County will fly at half-staff until sunset on Thursday, August 29, the day of his funeral.

In honor of Brandon Cunningham

Paulding County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Brandon Cunningham was killed in the line of duty on Saturday, August 17. Deputy Cunningham had served with the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office for over four years.

In his honor, flags at the State Capitol building and in Paulding County were also flown at half-staff last Friday, August 23.

What does half mast mean?

Flying the flag at half-mast means flying it halfway up the flagpole, which is a traditional way of expressing respect and mourning.

This serves to remind us of the risks police officers face every day and the enormous sacrifices they make to keep their communities safe.

By lowering the flags, the state of Georgia unites in mourning the loss of two heroes.
