Police shoot man and find dead 8-year-old child in his car

A dead 8-year-old child was found in the back seat of a car this week after the driver was shot by police.

On Thursday, the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office announced that law enforcement officials are joining their Maine counterparts in investigating an incident in which a man killed a woman in a residence in Troy, New Hampshire.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, police encountered the man — whose identity has not yet been determined — on the Piscataqua River Bridge, which connects New Hampshire and Maine. During the encounter, police shot the man and later discovered that an 8-year-old child who had been shot was inside the man’s vehicle.

New Hampshire Attorney General John M. Formella said in a press release that the incident “appears to have begun when an adult male killed an adult female at a residence in Troy, New Hampshire, during the night and then drove to the Piscataqua River Bridge on Interstate 95 at the border of Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Kittery, Maine.”

Regarding the discovery of the dead eight-year-old in the man’s car, Formella’s office stated that “the exact circumstances of this incident remain the subject of an active investigation.”

“There is currently no danger to the public. The I-95 Piscataqua River Bridge remains closed in both directions due to the ongoing investigation. Traffic is currently being diverted to the other two bridges in the area. Motorists are asked to use alternate routes,” Formella’s office said.

Formella also said his office plans to investigate the shooting of the unidentified man by a police officer.

After the incident, police closed the Piscataqua River Bridge for several hours.

“I-95 northbound and southbound at the Piscataqua River Bridge “High Rise Bridge” is closed due to an ongoing incident. Troopers are on scene. Drivers should expect delays and avoid the area if possible,” the New Hampshire State Police said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) Thursday morning.

At around 5:22 a.m. ET on Thursday, New Hampshire State Police said the situation remained tense and the bridge remained closed while officers continued their investigation.

In another post at 9:38 a.m. ET, the New Hampshire State Police said, “The Piscataqua River Bridge is now fully open. Traffic is flowing, but slowly. Motorists should expect delays.”

Before the incident Thursday morning, Formella said his office was investigating the “suspicious death” of the adult woman in Troy.

“The exact circumstances of this incident remain actively investigated,” the Attorney General said.

Further information on the incident is expected to be released later on Thursday.
