73-year-old man is the victim of a fatal hit-and-run accident while crossing the street in his motorized wheelchair

Some family members of Erasmo Perez watch the remains of his motorized wheelchair being thrown into a dumpster.

“I just saw it for the first time,” said Erasmo’s son David Perez. “The shirt he was wearing is there too. It’s heartbreaking, it hurts a lot of emotions in my family.”

The 73-year-old father and grandfather are partially paralyzed due to a stroke.

“He was always a hard worker and always made sure he provided for his family,” David said.

Thursday morning, August 8, 6 a.m. Around 6 a.m., Erasmo did what he does most mornings. He went to the nearby McDonald’s in Walmart for breakfast.

“That was the highlight of his day,” his son said.

But he didn’t make it. As he crossed the intersection of Southmore and Shaver in Pasadena, he was hit by a black truck.

“It was a blow I didn’t understand at first,” said David.

He was at work when his brother called and said their father had died.

“I didn’t understand what he meant by that,” David said.

Police told the family that Erasmo was dragged about 60 meters before the driver drove off.

“He was tortured, that’s my opinion,” David said. “He was dragged like an animal. That was inhumane towards another human being.”

David Perez has this to say to the driver who left his father dying on the road:

“You took something from his family. You will have to live with that for the rest of your life. Believe me, you will get caught,” he said.
