Jonathan Quick is surprisingly low on the list of youngest NHL goalies

Recently, Bleacher Report released its list of the 10 best goalies since 2000 and it was not a question of if, but where former Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quick would be on that list. However, his name surprisingly popped up pretty quickly, as he was only ranked as the eighth best goalie during that time period.

The article noted that the factors they considered most were wins, championships, and league-wide awards. Based on that, there isn’t much debate at the top of this list, as Martin Brodeur and Marc-Andre Fleury were numbers one and two, respectively.

Third place went to Roberto Luongo, which is another good placement for production, and you can argue that Luongo was better than Quick. However, starting at fourth place, where Andrei Vasilevskiy landed, Quick could make a pretty good case for a placement.

Quick’s opening sentence expresses his reasons for the higher rating quite well:

“Connecticut-born Jonathan Quick’s career has many chapters. He was selected in the third round by the Kings in 2005, made his debut in 2007-08 and won both the Stanley Cup and the Conn Smythe Trophy at the end of the 2011-12 season.”

Quick had already won the team and individual goaltender awards in the first four seasons of his NHL career, but two seasons later he won another Stanley Cup and then a third as a member of the Las Vegas Golden Knights (he did not play in those playoffs, however).

If the factors contributing to this list included awards and championships, it makes no sense to place a goalie like Connor Hellebuyck ahead of Quick since he has neither at this point in his career.

The next goalie is Henrik Lundqvist, another great goalie who doesn’t have a Stanley Cup and won the Vezina Trophy once. It’s hard to argue that he should be ranked ahead of Quick.

It is surprising that a goalkeeper like Jonathan Quick, who is arguably one of the best big-game goalkeepers in recent memory, is so low on such a list.
