Tips on safety and sportsmanship on the day of a football game | E-News

The WVU Police Department looks forward to cheering on the Mountaineers with you this football season. As we prepare to take on Penn State this weekend, fans are encouraged to cheer and celebrate responsibly by following these safety tips.

  • Under the West Virginia Campus Self-Defense Act, passed by the West Virginia Legislature in 2023 and commonly referred to as “campus carry,” fans are not permitted to bring a pistol or revolver to a WVU Athletics event at Milan Puskar Stadium. Weapons detection devices will be deployed at the entrances for all fans.

  • The WVU clear bag policy will continue to be in effect at all ticketed athletics events. Fans are permitted to use only one bag per person. More information on the clear bag policy can be found here.

  • If you drink alcohol, stick to one type of alcohol, drink no more than one drink per hour, and alternate alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic ones. Never let your drink out of your sight or put it down. And don’t leave a friend behind – use the buddy system or stick with a group.

  • If you notice anything suspicious, say something. Download the LiveSafe app and enable push notifications for direct and discreet two-way communication with University Police.

  • If you see someone in danger of a drug or alcohol overdose, call 911 for help. Pursuant to the University’s medical amnesty policy through the Campus Student Code and West Virginia law, bystanders and those affected by a drug or alcohol overdose may be protected from prosecution and may not face charges under the Campus Student Code if they seek emergency medical attention. Always seek help when a person’s life may be in danger.

  • Finally, we should be respectful of our fellow fans – home and away alike – and of the campus grounds. Throwing objects will not be tolerated, and a new state-of-the-art camera system will allow police officers to review footage in detail to determine where undesirable behavior is coming from.

If you need assistance at any time, call 911, contact UPD at 304-293-3136 or speak with an officer working the event. We are here for you and appreciate your cooperation as we work together to ensure a fun and safe gaming experience while cheering on our Mountaineers.

To receive notifications about emergencies and incidents on or near campus, register for the WVU Alert System.
