The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts that the coming winter in south-central Pennsylvania will be more moderate than usual.

The almanac places south-central Pennsylvania, including Adams, Lebanon and York counties, in the Appalachian region, which extends from Elmira, NY to Ashville, NC.

According to a press release, a slightly warmer than normal winter is forecast with below-average precipitation. However, average snowfall is expected in the north and above-average in the south.

The Old Farmers Almanac, founded in 1792, predicts a “calmer and milder” winter for most of the country.

The 1818 Farmers’ Almanac published its forecast earlier this month, expecting a “wet whirlwind” that would be mild and wet for south-central Pennsylvania.

Watch out for these periods of cold, snowy weather

When can you expect the coldest and snowiest periods in south-central Pennsylvania this winter?

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac press release, the coldest periods will be from mid-January to early February and late February.

The snowiest periods are forecast for late December, late February and early March, the press release says.

Almanacs publish their winter forecasts weeks before meteorologists issue their predictions.

According to Popular Mechanics, a study from the University of Illinois found that almanac predictions are correct only about half the time.
