Mother charged with manslaughter of 2-year-old child

A mother is accused of manslaughter in connection with the death of her two-year-old daughter.

According to the criminal complaint, 37-year-old Christian Lillian Vannett is accused of second-degree manslaughter and faces up to ten years in prison.

On May 28, Minneapolis Police officers were called to a home where a two-year-old child was not breathing. Life-saving measures were attempted, but the child died.

Later, on August 6, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner determined that the child had 9.7 nanograms per milliliter of fentanyl in her system, as well as 0.43 nanograms per milliliter of norfentanyl, Narcan, and caffeine. Her death was classified as acute fentanyl poisoning.

The criminal complaint states that Minneapolis police found signs of drug use in the building on May 28: capped needles, blue bandages, saline solution and cotton balls lying on the floor.

The child’s mother, Vannett, told police during the initial incident that she fell asleep on the floor with her child on her chest and that her daughter was unresponsive when she woke up.

When police asked Vannett if it was possible that the child had consumed narcotics, she handed officers a plate with a white powder on it, which she said could be fentanyl.

Police said they identified the powder as fentanyl and found several pills and needles in the apartment.

In a later interview, Vannett told police she had taken pills, supposedly for a sprained ankle, but she denied putting the fentanyl on the plate.

The criminal complaint states that Vannett is not currently in custody on the manslaughter charge.
