15-year-old high school cross-country runner collapses and dies

PLEASANT VIEW, Tenn. (WSMV/Gray News) – A Tennessee teenager died Tuesday while jogging in the neighborhood.

The Cheatham County Sheriff’s Office identified the teenager as 15-year-old Tristen Franklin.

The Sycamore High School student was jogging on his normal route as a cross-country runner that day when he collapsed.

Neighbor Troy Simpkins said he usually saw Tristen during the teens’ afternoon runs and they would greet each other.

On Tuesday, he said he saw him jogging and thought nothing of it until his husband received a call from another neighbor saying the teenager had collapsed.

The group quickly called 911, but unfortunately Tristen died.

“I feel for them. I mean, it’s so sad. He was so young and had his whole life ahead of him,” Simpkins said. “Tell the people in your life how much you love them.”

The Cheatham County School District expressed its “deep sadness” at the news of the high school student’s death.

“Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with the student’s family and friends during this difficult time. The impact of such a loss is immeasurable,” a school district spokesperson said.

Sycamore High School also offers counseling support to those affected.

On Tuesday, temperatures in the Pleasant View area exceeded 38 degrees Celsius.

The teenager’s cause of death was not immediately released as the coroner continued his investigation.
