“The whole house was shaking.” Two injured in boat explosion at Old Bridge Marina, officials say

A boat explosion rocked a coastal community in Middlesex County, injuring two men.

Officials said two men were taken to two different hospitals with varying injuries. People living near the Raritan Marina reported that their homes shook and windows rattled as a result of the explosion. One man described it as a shock wave.

Flames could be seen blazing across the water and thick black smoke filled the sky.

The alarm about a boat explosion at the Raritan Marina in Old Bridge came in around 3:19 p.m. on Wednesday.

The investigation into the cause of the explosion and fire on the boat is ongoing, but authorities say there is no suspicion.

Several residents of this community whose boats are anchored in the marina say the site is a gas station.

One boater explained that a ventilation process must take place before fueling a boat or an explosion could occur. All of this is under investigation. Richard Buffi, who lives half a mile down the road from the marina, said his son, a firefighter, told him the news.

“He told me if I had heard the explosion, I would have asked, ‘What explosion?’ I said I heard a loud bang, and he told me a boat that was refueling down here at the dock exploded,” Buffi said, adding, “The whole house shook. We didn’t know what it was.”

Two men were injured in the explosion: a 57-year-old who was flown to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital with burns to his face and legs, and a 47-year-old who was taken to Bayshore Medical with glass splinter injuries to his abdomen and arms.
