Former NBA guard looks back on his epic debut against LeBron James

Former NBA guard Michael Carter-Williams played 395 games for the Philadelphia 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets and Orlando Magic. He conquered the league in his first game when he recorded a double-double against the LeBron James-led Miami Heat in 2013.

Carter-Williams described the out-of-body debut while appearing alongside George Balekji on the latest episode of NESN’s “Hold My Banner.”

“I didn’t know what to expect. I just went in there and just went with the flow,” Carter-Williams told Balekji. “Obviously, it went really well. … I just wanted to win the game. The game was getting exciting. It was getting close. The crowd went crazy. We were in Philadelphia the year before against the champions. My parents are in the crowd. They’re sitting courtside. It was a night I’ll never forget.”

Carter-Williams was drafted 11th overall by Philadelphia in 2013 and recorded 22 points, 12 assists, and seven rebounds and nine steals against the Heat in his debut for the 76ers. He went on to have a successful season and was named Rookie of the Year for the 2013-2014 season.

“I had the ball in my hands a lot,” Carter-Williams said of his rookie season. “I was able to be successful on the field. It was great. It was a tough battle to be Rookie of the Year. I remember that was just a goal of mine since I was drafted.”
