CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – Charleston police have released new details about a shooting that left a 15-year-old boy dead.
Desean Matthews, 18, of Charleston, is charged with attempted murder and armed robbery, according to Sergeant Chris Stinson.
The charges stem from the fatal shooting that occurred Sunday evening outside the Palmilla Apartments on Ashley River Road.
Investigators believe Matthews and his relative, 15-year-old Rakeem Xavier Jordan Baker, planned to rob a 17-year-old at gunpoint.
During the attempted robbery, the 17-year-old, whose name was not released, was shot and returned fire at the two teenagers.
Baker died at the scene of the accident and the 17-year-old was taken to hospital with injuries that were probably not life-threatening.
Stinson said no charges have been filed against the 17-year-old.
Mattews was taken to the Al Cannon Detention Center.
Charleston police are still investigating the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to contact the on-duty police chief at 843-720-2422 or email [email protected].
