SPORTS SHORTS: Hawkeyes Jones and Lachey placed on watch lists | News, Sports, Jobs

IOWA CITY — University of Iowa seniors Logan Jones and Luke Lachey were named to the nominees’ lists Friday for the Rimington Trophy and John Mackey Award, respectively. The Rimington Trophy is given annually to the nation’s top center, while the Mackey Award is given to the nation’s most outstanding tight end.

Jones was also named to Rimington’s preseason roster before last season. Former Hawkeye Tyler Linderbaum was the 2021 Rimington Trophy winner. Jones was already nominated to the Outland Trophy Watch List, which is given to the nation’s top offensive lineman, earlier this month.

The Council Bluffs native was selected to the All-Big Ten third team by the conference media and received honorable mention All-Big Ten honors for 2023 from league coaches. Jones started 13 games at center, missing only the game against Nebraska due to injury.

The watch list includes 40 players and is compiled by the Rimington Trophy Committee in consultation with Pro Football Focus.

Lachey was previously honored as a second-team preseason All-Big Ten tight end by Athlon and was selected as a fourth-team All-Big Ten tight end by Phil Steele. He was also named to the Comeback Player of the Year Award Watch List earlier this week.

Last season, Lachey caught 10 passes for 131 yards before suffering a season-ending injury in the third game of the season. In 30 games played, he started 13 times and scored four touchdowns and 662 yards on 46 catches.

In 2022, former Hawkeye Sam LaPorta was one of three finalists for the Mackey Award. Iowa has had two previous Mackey Award winners, including Dallas Clark in 2002 and TJ Hockenson in 2018. Tony Moeaki (2009), Allen Reisner (2010) and Noah Fant (2018) were also semifinalists for the award.

Cyclones player Brahmer makes Mackey Awards watch list

AMES — Iowa State sophomore tight end Benjamin Brahmer has been named to the John Mackey Award Watch List for the 2024 season. The award is given annually to the nation’s most outstanding tight end.

Brahmer is fresh off his first season in Ames, where he earned multiple Freshman All-America honors, broke the ISU record for true freshman tight ends with 28 passes caught, and rushed for 352 yards and two touchdowns.

Brahmer was honorably named to the All-Big 12 selection by the league’s coaches last fall.

Hawkeye women get opponents for the Cancun Challenge

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa women’s basketball team has set its schedule for the 2024 Women’s Cancun Challenge, which will be held at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya on the Yucatan Peninsula.

The Hawkeyes will play two games in the Riviera Division, facing Rhode Island on Thursday, November 28th at 5:30 p.m. and BYU on Friday, November 29th at 8:00 p.m.

This will be the Hawkeyes’ fifth appearance in the tournament (2007, 2010, 2013, 2016). Iowa was scheduled to play in the event in 2021, but both games were canceled due to Covid. The Hawkeyes have an overall record of 7-2 in the tournament and won the title in 2013.
