Fact or fiction: Iowa is an underdog for the CFB playoffs

Fact or fiction: Iowa is an underdog for the CFB playoffs

Rivals national recruiting analyst Greg Smith is accompanied by a national recruitment analyst Michael Levenson, Thomas from InsideNDSports.com And Eliot Clough from HawkeyeBeacon.com They are asked to discuss three topics and determine whether they think each statement is a FACT or a FICTION.

Fact or fiction: Iowa is an underdog for the CFB playoffs

1. Nebraska is still in the running for four-star WR Michael Terry.

Levenson: FACT. It is logical, Texas as a guide for Michael Terry At this point it would not be advisable NebraskaThe Huskers have aroused a legitimate interest in the eyes of Terry and his family, who have only glowing reviews of Matt Rhule and the whole program. Terry has said he will likely come to Lincoln for a visit in the near future, September 7th is the scheduled date. That visit alone would confirm Terry’s interest in the Huskers at this time, as he would have to pay for the visit at his own expense.

The Longhorns may have quite a lead over him right now, but I would consider Nebraska a closer second place finisher at this point.

Smith: FACT. At this point in the recruiting process, Texas appears to have the edge. A lead is not a commitment, however. Until Terry makes (or signs) his verbal commitment, Nebraska is still in the running. The Huskers offer Terry a lot as a development program under coach Matt Rhule. He is expected to play against Colorado could shake things up and make Nebraska an even bigger factor. If Texas is indeed ahead now, it had better keep pushing for its commitment and signing day.

2. Iowa is an underdog contender for the CFB playoffs.

Clough: FACT. A 10-4 season in 2023 with Deacon Hill Playing key snaps under center for 10 games was nothing short of a miracle – and had a certain refereeing crew not messed up one of the greatest plays in Iowa history, that record would have been 11-3. With eight of 11 starters returning on defense, the Hawkeyes will once again be among the nation’s best on that side of the ball. Offensively, if Iowa shows a pulse below Tim LesterThe Hawkeyes have a real chance to be one of the best teams in the Big Ten.

How their schedule came about – No. 2 Ohio State is their only opponent in the preseason AP Top 25 – and things could go well for Iowa to make the College Football Playoffs. They will probably have to go 11-1 to do so, but that is not completely out of the question for Kirk Ferentz and the Hawkeyes.

Smith: FACT. It seems like this is one of the reasons Iowa is predicted to have a good season every year, but look at the team’s schedule. The only game the Hawkeyes will definitely not be the favorite in is against Ohio State. Otherwise, the schedule is perfect for the Hawkeyes to do what they want to do under coach Church Ferentz. They’ll play good defense and just a good enough offense to win a lot of games. With the expanded 12-team playoffs, that might be enough to make it happen.

3. We should talk more about the Irish as contenders for the national championship.

James: FICTION. Notre-Dame is being talked about as a playoff contender with realistic expectations of making the 12-team field. But being a legitimate national championship contender early in the season seems a bit far-fetched. Notre Dame has too many question marks on the offensive line at this point to call it a title contender. The Irish will face Texas A&MThis group could be a game-changer for Notre Dame. The Irish should have one of the best defenses in the country, but they need to prove what they can do on offense before they can compete for a title.

Smith: FICTION. It’s not impossible that Notre Dame will have a run this year, but it might be an exaggeration to call them a national championship contender just yet. The defense should be excellent. It will keep the Irish in the game and win some games. They’ll need it early as they break in a new offensive line and figure out what they have at quarterback. Riley LeonardThe new offensive line needs to keep Leonard healthy for the team to go far. Making the playoffs should be the goal this season. Anything beyond that is a bonus for the coach. Marcus Freeman.
