In a recent interview, veteran actress Sigourney Weaver said she would play Ripley in the Foreigner Franchise if it gets a good script. But I suspect that’s where the problem lies. A good script for a Foreigner Film, simple. A good script for a Foreigner The film that brings Ripley back is much more difficult.
Here is what Weaver said Deadline about her return to the franchise that launched her superstar status.
“I feel like she’s never far from me, but then again, I’ve never read a script that said, ‘This is what you have to do.’ So for me, she’s in this other dimension, safe from the alien for now. I don’t really think about it, but you know, it’s not completely impossible, and certainly a lot of good filmmakers are inspired by the material.”
“How much does the audience really need or want another Ripley movie? I don’t really sit around and think about it, but if it came to that, I would consider it. It’s come up a few times, but I’m busy with other things too. Ripley deserves her rest.”
The problem, in my opinion, is the schedule.
Can Ripley return?
Ripley is dead, or her original version is dead if all the films are canon. Between Foreigner And Aliens, here is the latest movie Romulus When the film takes place, Ripley is in a hypersleep that lasts 57 years.
The only way to tell a Ripley story effectively is to have it play out in time,resurrectionand that wasn’t the best movie. That wouldn’t really be Ellen Ripley though, would it? It would be the Xeno/Ripley hybrid. So the question is, do we fans want to see that version of Ripley again? Where could this story go now that pretty much every trace of the Xenos has disappeared, aside from their own blood… again.
On the other hand, maybe that’s exactly what the series needs, a leap forward to new stories. There are only so many stories you can tell in between. Foreigner And Aliens. We have had two decent ones in Alien: Isolation Video game and new film Romulus. Romulus Director Fede Alvarez seems to have plans for a sequel, but at some point you have to ask questions.
