Football beats No. 3 BYU in friendly

PROVO, Utah (September 24, 2018) – The University of Wyoming football team kicked off its 2024 season at BYU on Friday night. It was an exhibition game on South Field, and the Cowgirls focused on themselves and improving their performance before the season opener next week.

On the way there, Wyoming also managed a 1-0 win over the third-ranked Cougars in Josh Purdum’s first game as head coach.

“The things we’ve implemented have changed quickly, and without the confidence in these girls and their belief in themselves, we couldn’t have done what we’re doing,” Purdum said. “They’re showing very quickly how much confidence there is in this team, and that’s exciting. Now they’ve set the standard. They’ve shown they can win on the road in a hostile environment and play a complete game.”

Wyoming’s result could not have been more celebrated. Gabby Cluttera senior player who had played very little in her career, shot after a pass from Kiley Ballek in the 35th minute, which was the only goal of the game.

“She’s a leader through and through and when she steps on the field she plays with nothing but joy,” Purdum said. “For her to be able to do that in Provo is incredible. I’m so happy for her and I know the team is happy for her too.”

goalkeeper Haley Bartel impressed with a great game in goal, stopping nine shots, many of which she had to leave her feet, to earn a shutout.

“There were a lot of fans behind her for both goals and the fact that she stopped that and got a clean win on every decision is great,” Purdum said. “I hope she feels like she’s on top of the world because she deserves it.”

Wyoming fired a total of 13 shots, Hadley Linder, Alyssa Bedard And Jazi Barela had two each. BYU managed 15 shots.

As mentioned, the Cowgirls open the regular season next week, traveling to Washington to play a game at Husky Soccer Stadium on Thursday at 8 p.m.
