Traffic and travel on Labor Day: Best and worst times to drive and fly

Millions of Americans are preparing to head to the airport or hit the highway for the last long weekend of summer.

Here’s what you need to know about traveling over Labor Day weekend:

Air travel

According to the Transportation Security Administration, more than 17 million people are expected to be screened at U.S. airports between Thursday, August 29, and Wednesday, September 4, an 8.5% increase from last year.

The TSA expects Friday, August 30, to be its busiest day, with 2.86 million travelers expected.

The top 10 busiest travel days of all time, according to the TSA, have all occurred since May.

United Airlines is expecting its busiest Labor Day weekend ever this year. More than 2.9 million passengers will fly between Thursday, August 29, and Tuesday, September 3, up 3% from last year. United predicts August 30 will be its busiest day.

American Airlines is expecting this year to be its biggest Labor Day ever, with over 3.8 million passengers expected from August 29 to September 3 – 14% more than last year. American says the busiest travel days will be August 29 and 30.

For Southwest Airlines, August 30th and September 2nd are considered peak travel days.

According to Hopper, the busiest airports are expected to be Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

The most popular domestic destinations for Labor Day are New York City, Seattle and Los Angeles, according to Hopper.

Road traffic

If you hit the road on Thursday, August 29, the worst time to drive is between 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., according to analytics firm INRIX.

On Friday, August 30, the worst time to travel is between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. On Monday, September 2, the busiest time on the roads is between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m., INRIX said.

According to AAA, drivers can expect lower gas prices this year. The national average price of gasoline during Labor Day weekend 2023 was $3.81; this year, prices are expected to be around $3.50.
