Seafish calls on industry to announce good news

The British industry body Seafish has launched a campaign calling on seafood producers to tell positive and inspirational stories.

Companies are encouraged to tell positive stories to support a new campaign aimed at improving public perceptions of seafood and its production.

According to a recent survey by Seafish, seafood consumption has fallen at a worrying rate across the UK, with high prices largely to blame.

Seafish this week launched Seafood for Life, an initiative to help companies and individuals in the industry spread good news that might not otherwise be known to the public.

These could include technological and environmental advances that help make the supply chain more efficient and resilient, stories about job creation in communities, spreading the message that fish is a high-protein food source, or industry case studies that help dispel myths.

Seafish announced that it will then work with contributors to develop inspirational stories into content such as videos and photos, news, social media posts, fact sheets and more to be shared with seafood companies to help them communicate positively about the industry.

The content will also be featured in a new online “Seafood for Life” hub on the Seafish website.

Marcus Coleman, CEO of Seafish, said: “The UK seafood industry has told us they want our support to improve perceptions of fish and seafood.

“We know the industry is facing challenges, but it is also clear that it is full of passionate people with remarkable stories to tell. And we developed Seafood for Life to shine a spotlight on these positive examples.

“We’re asking people to support this new initiative and tell us their stories so we can create engaging content to share to encourage the world to think better about seafood and the industry that puts it on our plates.”

He added: “Examples could be the industry’s response to climate change, dealing with end-of-life fishing equipment or attracting new market entrants. Whatever positive stories there are, we want to hear about them.”

Although Seafish is taking the lead, the organisation believes that Seafood for Life should remain in industry hands and is therefore encouraging businesses to help shape the company’s future direction by sharing their ideas via the dedicated email address [email protected].
